Gastronomy 17/07/2024
a collage of images of barcelona 's top sangrias

Sangria is one of the most popular drinks in Spanish gastronomy, which is especially popular in the summer months and can be found in all bars, restaurants and beach bars. According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy, sangria is made up of water or soda with wine, sugar, lemon and other additives.

Although the International Bartenders Association does not recognize it in its official list of cocktails because it was not created by a bartender and does not have a specific recipe, it meets all the requirements to be one, due to the mixture of alcoholic beverages and other elements.

Apparently British sailors heading to the West Indies in the 17th century were the first 'master mixers' when combining wine (Port or Madeira) with fruits, spices and sugar. These primitive bloodletting sought not only to 'distract' the crew but also to serve as an alternative to bad water. That term, 'sangaree' eventually led to the popular “sangria”.

There are actually a multitude of variants: in Asturias cider is usually used instead of red wine, with white wine it is called “white sangria” and even with sparkling wines such as cava or champagne. In addition to wine, a second type of alcoholic beverage is usually added, which is usually a liquor such as sherry brandy, Cointreau triple sec, Martini vermouth or apple liqueur.
