Barcelona is known not only for its modernist architecture, vibrant nightlife and exquisite cuisine, but also for the charming cat figurines that grace the city. These sculptures and works of art pay homage to the unique relationship that Barcelonans have with these animals. Below, we present some of the most emblematic ones.

BOTERO'S CAT

Located in Plaza Catalunya, this iconic sculpture by Colombian artist Fernando Botero is a landmark in the art world and a favourite among tourists. With its distinctive rounded shape, the cat invites visitors to sit next to it and enjoy the views of the square. It has become a popular meeting point and an excellent opportunity to capture photographs.

THE CAT OF THE LARIBAL GARDENS

In the charming Laribal Gardens, located on Montjuïc, there is a sculpture of a cat that adds a magical touch to this green space. This garden is perfect for strolling, relaxing and enjoying nature, while the cat becomes a curious companion during your visit. It is an ideal place to take a break while exploring the city. BLACK CAT LOTTERY ADMINISTRATION

Located on Calle Pelai in Barcelona, this is an iconic place that is much loved by locals. This establishment is dedicated to selling lottery tickets, and has gained fame for giving away numerous prizes over the years.
Furthermore, its location on one of the busiest streets in the city makes it an accessible and attractive place for those looking to try their luck. It is certainly a place that combines tradition and a good atmosphere.

CAT SPACE

It is the first Catcafé in Barcelona, an adoption centre and school, which was created with the aim of giving visibility to adult cats, which are invisible in shelters and animal shelters.
They have a cafeteria service so that the project can be managed by themselves, with delicious vegan snacks. The amount of the drinks goes entirely to the care of the cats.

“THE SQUARE OF THE CATS”

In April 1998, Arnal Ballester painted a mural at the intersection of Xuclà and Pintor Fortuny streets in the Raval district of Barcelona. His role has been fundamental not only as a creator, but also as a facilitator in the process of collaboration with the community. Ballester has contributed his distinctive style and artistic vision, helping to shape the murals that reflect the identity of the neighbourhood.
Furthermore, their involvement has helped make the project a platform for community participation, allowing residents to feel part of the artistic creation. Thanks to their work, the murals not only beautify the space, but also tell a story about the connection between cats, the community and local culture.

Other “kittens” to discover:

At the heart of Catalan modernism, Casa de les Punxes (or Casa Terradas) features a cat on its façade. Designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, this building is an outstanding example of the city’s unique architecture and the cat symbolises local history. Visitors can appreciate the architectural details while searching for the cat hidden in the ornamentation. We invite you to find it and photograph it!

RESTAURANT 4 GATS is an iconic establishment located in the heart of Barcelona, known for its rich history and artistic atmosphere. Founded in 1897, it was a meeting point for artists and intellectuals of the time, including figures such as Pablo Picasso. Its decoration combines modernist elements with a bohemian touch, creating a welcoming space full of character.

There are several pieces of art and decorations that reference cats, as part of its theme and name. Illustrations and paintings of cats are part of the artistic atmosphere that characterizes the place, contributing to its bohemian charm. This reflects its connection to art and culture.
